My Favorite Outdoor Game

Cornhole was one of the most common outdoor games for me and my friends growing up. It’s simple to learn and physically easy enough where almost anyone can give it a go. Today’s light newsletter is going to outline how to play, although finding friends to play with is going to be up to you… Enjoy!

Rules of the Game

What You’ll Need

  • Two Cornhole Boards

  • An area with at least 30 linear feet

  • 8 cornhole bags, 4 of one color and 4 of another

  • 4 individual players (although you can play with 2)

Purpose of the Game & Setup

The goal is to score 21 points before the other team. Points are scored as cornhole bags land on the boards or in the hole. To set up a game a cornhole, place the cornhole boards 27 feet away facing each other. One player will stand next to the board and their teammate will line up directly across from them on the other board. On one side a player will have the board to their left and their teammate will stand on the other side with the board on their right.

The other team will set up the same way but on the opposite side of each board from the first team. It should look like this; player 1 on the left side of the board, the board, player 2 on the right side of the board. On the opposite side you’ll see the same thing with teammates directly in front of each other.

Starting the Game

Deciding which team goes first can be done anyway you’d like. Oftentimes when multiple games have been played, the winning team will start. All 8 cornhole bags will be on one of end split between the two players. Each team’s bags will have a color they will use for the entirety of the game. Once it’s decided who throws first, that player will toss their first bag towards the opposite board trying to put the bag in the hole, or at least on the board. Bags that hit the ground and bounce on the board, slide off, are touching the ground, or get hit off will not be counted for points.

The players will alternate throwing meaning team 1 throws then team 2 then back to team 1 until both players have thrown all 4 of their bags. Points only get tallied once all 8 bags are thrown and settled on the opposing board. Bags are not allowed to be moved or rethrown once a turn has started.

Scoring

Points are counted up at the end of the round after all 8 bags have been thrown. Legal bags on the board are worth 1 point. Any bag hanging off the board not touching the ground still counts for a point. Bags that went into the hole are worth 3 points. Points from opposing teams cancel each other out. If one team has 2 bags on the board and the other team has 3 bags on the board, the second team will be awarded one point.

The team that scored the most points in a round will throw first in the next round. If both teams scored the same number of points, resulting in no points, revert back to the last round a team won and use that for who will throw first. The first team to reach 21 points exactly will win. If a team goes over 21 points, then they will be pushed back to 11 points.
