Worldly Wednesday | How to Address an Envelope

Learn the much needed life skill of addressing an envelope. In the world of emails, sending a letter can be a pleasant surprise.

Friends in Far Places

There will come a time in your life, if it hasn’t already, where you’ll need to send a letter through the mail. Amazingly, the United States has an effective mail delivery method that allows recipients to get a letter across the country in a couple of days. When you need to rekindle that fire for your long-lost love, use these steps when addressing an envelope. Enjoy!

How to Address an Envelope

Image 1: Address an envelope in three simple steps

Step 1: Add the Sender’s Return Address

The first thing you’ll want to do when addressing an envelope is writing, or placing, the return address in the top left corner. Many folks buy custom stickers to place in this corner to save time and make the letter more official. If writing it out, put your name at the top followed by your street address in line two and the city, state, and zip on line three.

Step 2: Add the Recipient’s Name & Address

Second, you’ll need to identify where the post office is sending your letter. In the middle of the envelope, on the top line, you’ll write the name, business, or organization, to whom you are sending the letter. On line two you’ll write the street address followed by the city, state, and zip on line three.

Step 3: Add a Stamp

All mailings through the United States Postal Service (USPS) need to have a stamp or other paid postage in order to enter the mail. Stamps can be bought at your local post office in person or online here: Stamps | USPS.com. Stamps are sold in “books” containing 20 stamps. Place the stamp in the top right corner of the envelope, seal it up, and you are ready to mail your letter.

Step 4: Mailing Your Letter

Here are three options when mailing:

  • Place it in your mailbox with the flag lifted to tell the mailman/mailwoman you have outgoing mail for them to handle.

  • Take it to your local post office and hand it to the teller behind the counter.

  • Place your letter in a large blue USPS collection box (seen below).

Sending International Mail

Addressing a letter for international mail is nearly identical except you’ll need to add a country below the “city, state, zip” line for both the sender and the recipient. International stamps are required for international mail, you can find international stamps here: Stamps | International Stamps | USPS.com
