Worldly Wednesday! How Do I Register to Vote?

Because 2024 is an election year, it's only fitting that the first “Worldly Wednesday” reviews the voter registration process. Here's How:

Everything You Need to Know About Voter Registration:

Voting is a great right, privilege, and opportunity for us here in the United States. It is one of the best ways to make our voices heard and put our money (votes) where our mouth is. Many of you have voted in the past, but others may be voting for the first time this year. If you fall into the latter category, here’s how you can register.

A Few Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years old by election day.

  • Be a US citizen.

  • Each state may have additional requirements so double check the link below.

  • Once you enter the link you will see a dropdown box to choose the state you live in, or your current “residence” shown by the address on your license. Each state’s voter registration process is going to slightly differ from another.

  • States will require you to register somewhere between 10-30 days prior to Election Day in order for your registration to be valid. Don’t wait until the last minute.

  • Most states allow you to fill out an online form for your registration, however some states like South Dakota will require you to mail or submit your registration in person to the county auditor’s office.

  • Make sure to fill out the form completely and accurately to ensure your registration is not delayed.

3. Checking the Status of Your Voter Registration

  • At the bottom of Image 2 above, you will see a link to your state’s process to check the status of your voter registration. This is going to depend on your state so double check you’re on the right page.

4. Researching the Candidates You Want to Vote For

  • Let’s not get in the weeds on this. Just do your research and vote for who you feel will do the best job. Listening to Uncle John at Thanksgiving and “SuperUserMan12345” on Twitter or X are probably two sources you should stay away from. But hey that’s just me. 🥴

5. Finding your Polling Place

  • Every county will likely have a handful of polling locations, but you can’t vote just anywhere. Your registration will likely tell you a precinct or station for you to vote at. However, if you’re unsure you can use this link to help you locate where you need to go on election day.

6. Go on Election Day and Vote!

  • The national election to vote for the president of the United States, and other levels of government, is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November (in election years). This year, election day is November 5th, 2024. There are many different elections throughout the year, but this is the “biggest one”.
